PIN’s now the only way to pay.
The PINwise Industry Security Initiative has been implemented and PIN is now the main form of card payment authorisation for most Australian cardholders.
The industry-wide move to expand PIN at the point of sale (POS) and phase-out cardholder signatures as a form of verification on Australian credit and debit chip cards is expected to be completed by 18 October 2014. There has been no change to contactless transactions.
BankSA has been progressively updating EFTPOS terminal software throughout September to reflect the change from signature to PIN authorisation. After 18 October merchant EFTPOS terminal(s) will no longer display an option to sign for the majority of credit and debit card purchases.
Please note that not all transactions will require a PIN, exemptions include:
- contactless transactions under $100
- some small ticket payments, under $35
- international transactions - customers with cards issued by an overseas bank
- non-chipped cards (magnetic stripe only)
- signature enabled cards - issued to accommodate special needs of individual cardholders
- transactions from most unattended terminals, e.g. parking meters, kiosks and vending machines
- Mail Order, Telephone Order transactions (MOTO)
- Online transactions (eCommerce)
